Seasons of Contemplation: A Book of Midnight Meditations

Rate this book
In Seasons of Contemplation, Browning offers the reader humble yet impacting meditations on the topics of religion, connection, mindfulness, ecology, the spiritual journey, and the perils of modern culture. The ruminations gathered within these pages provide simple insights that help bring sense to the chaos and hustle of our daily life. Direct and unpretentious, Browning once again reminds us that “Becoming aware of the dearness in what might otherwise be regarded as mundane is the ultimate form of insight.”

L.M. Browning (they/them) is a bestselling poet whose hybrid of introspective travel writing and visual art focuses on the alchemizing of trauma through active awe-seeking and a re-wilding of one’s life and self.

Over the last fifteen years, Browning’s twenty-something intention to help “ensure the mainstream isn’t the only stream,” has taken shape in the form of the enduring indie platforms: Homebound Publications, Wayfarer Books, The Wayfarer Magazine & Navigator Graphics. Their own published works have received five Pushcart Prize nominations, two Foreword Review Book Awards, the Nautilus Gold Medal for Poetry, and the Nautilus Silver Medal for Poetry.

Browning sits on the State of Connecticut’s/NAMI’s Lived Experience Committee and received national certification as a Survivor of Suicide Attempt (SOSA), Group Peer Facilitator through the Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services Foundation in Los Angeles. They are a graduate of the University of London and Harvard University.

I sat down with coffee this morning and pulled this little book off the "just in from the mail" pile and didn't stop until I'd finished reading it. What a quiet little call to action, in a way, for us to quit groveling in sorrow and, rather, get up and embrace the spirit in the world. Words I needed to hear, especially this line:

"It takes more depth of soul to believe life can be better than to give ourselves to despair and become a martyr to our own world-weariness."

Thank you, Leslie.

I received this book for free through Goodreads First Reads.

"Profound" is the first word that comes to mind in relation to this book. It packs a big punch in a little package. This beautifully written gem contains a vast abundance of truth and wisdom and insight and clarity. Its powerful ruminations are food for the mind and solace for the soul. I've read every meditation twice and feel sure that I'll continue to read them again and again.

A very slim book of poetry. I could see someone taking this on an extended backpacking trip or solo nature retreat and enjoying it, but I just did not resonate with it and will pass the book on to a friend.
